Races, Babies, Injuries & more...

Hi all,

While I was away busy 'enduring' winter training in Perth for most of the past month, lots of activities have been going on with Trilogy Members including Kilkenny Tri, Beast of the East, the local inaugural Stump Jumpers race which I hear was a massive success, and of course Challenge Roth. Have I left any out? There must be many race reports out there for sharing? I hear Trilogy members have been busy securing podium places at these. Please send the stories to me at helena@trilogy.ie and congratulations to everyone who competed.

Special congratulations also on behalf of Trilogy members, to our very own chairman and his family on the birth of baby Max Osborne. I foresee Osborne relay teams participating (and probably cleaning up at that) in the very near future.

Best wishes and get well soon to Niall Kavanagh. I understand he admits to taking his following in our secretaries footsteps too far recently by injuring his foot, putting him out of the running for a little while. Get well soon Niall.

Best of luck to everyone racing in Bunclody & Brian Boru this weekend. I know I have the glad rags out and the have been practicing lots over the past month for the partying on Sunday night in Kilaloe. I for one am looking forward to it.

~NB~    Race reports please!!!! We all love to have a read of them.

Wednesday 1 August 2012

Brian Boru

I see Alan Phelan can't make the Olympic Race at Brian Boru and is offering his place up if anyone interested.  There might be a Sprint place up for grabs also as I think Niall Kavangh was entered into that.

Tri Athlone Race Reports

I have to warn you all you are in for a treat. Seanachí Andy Williams has proven himself to be more than a little skillful with the 'cúpla focal' here in sharing his race report with us all as he describes Tri Athlone which may have been a race as much against his buddy, Al, as anyone else I suspect. You can read his report here:

My own, which I'm a little reluctant to post after the above, can be viewed here:

Enjoy. Best of Luck to those racing this weekend in Carrick, Rosslare, and Roth. Have a great race and enjoy it. We look forward to reading the race reports!! Hint, Hint, Nod, Nod.

Sunday 1 July 2012

A day spent in Athlone

Well done to all competitors who raced in all kinds of weather on Saturday the last day of our 'summery' June, namely: David Murphy, Kieran Hoey, Margot Barry, Laura Durcan, Aoifa McEvoy, Helena Rothwell, Andy Williams, Jonathan Forrest, Susan Wall, David Wilkes & Sandra Furney. We also had Mark of PLC fame with our crew. It was a long day, but somehow for me was a more enjoyable race than it had been for my previous attendance at Athlone. The river was very fast as we're all coming to expect these days. All down stream, and I believe approx 950m for both races. The cycle was windy and wild, and the run was the usual, for Athlone, a great spectator heavy challenging town run. Kieran Hoey did himself and the club very proud by coming no less than first in his age group with his sprint distance race. Well done again Kieran. Race reports please to Helena@trilogy.ie

Best of luck to Trilgoy members racing in Rosslare and Carrick on Suir this coming weekend. Have a great race. May the sun god be in better form for you all.

Portlaoise Leisure Centre Spin-athon July 4th

Portlaoise Leisure Centre are having a one day Spin-athon which some of you might like to participate in. The day is in aid of Rehab care which provides respite for families with disabled children or relatives and also helps fund various resources for families. A very worthy cause and we are trying to raise as much as possible.

Portlaoise Leisure Centre are charging €4 for member to do a spin class and €9 for a non member to participate in a class. You can book in for as many as you like and ALL of the money raised goes to the charity. Our instructors will be delivering as well as DVD led classes. I have attached a list of all the classes being delivered on the day. If you could encourage your members to take part we would be most grateful.

The day in question is WEDNESDAY 4TH JULY 2012

Tri Athlone '12 (edit)

The following are the key times for racing on Saturday in Athlone as per their website.

"Saturday 30th June!

10.30: Registration is open for all athletes.

13.30: Registration is closed for all athletes.

14..00: Race briefing at in transition for all distances.

14..30: Transition is cleared.

14..50: Paratriathlon starts.

15.00: Olympic distance enters the water followed by
Sprint then Try-a-Tri.. "

I would propose that those who would like to join us to drive down together could meet at the old Dunnes Stores carpark on the Mountmellick Rd at 9.30am. There will be a long day of hanging around with big numbers of people there. We might never meet each other if we don't arrange it. In that spirit I will also propose a second meeting at 12.30 for lunch at Transition exit? Feel free to dispute these times if you feel they won't work. We can easily change them.

Dun More East June '12

Congratulations to everyone who braved the thunderous showers and sun burning sunshine mix of weather yesterday in Dun More East. A fantastic day was had by all on what is one of the more difficult sprint triathlons on the calendar each year. And what a turn out. Well done again everyone. There was much talk of making Dun More East the weekend away next year. Some food for thought for you all. If anyone has thoughts for a race report in mind I would love to pop it up here. Please send it to me on helena@trilogy.ie

There are links to photos, race report and results here. Dun More East TI

Dunmore East

Hi Guys,

Is anyone interested in car pooling for Dunmore East on Saturday? It should take less than 2 hours to get there, and registration closes at 10, so if we leave Portlaoise at around 7 we should be in good shape.
I can take one person and a bike and gear.
If your interested, let me know.

Roy.

Last chance!!

Hi Guys,

I'm about to close the "raffle" for Brain Bonham & co's Cycle event sponsorship thingy. If there was any of you who meant to support it but has been putting it on the long finger, don't say you weren't warned. I will be closing this sometime tomorrow evening. Thank you to everyone who did support it.

This Week's Training

Hi Folks,

Sorry I'm a bit late this week but here goes.

Tuesday Cycle: 7.00pm PLC.  Tonight is a Time Trial of either 5 or 10km depending on what you choose.  Everyone will cycle out to Montague Hotel.  Murt is hoping to mark out the start and finish lines for tonights TT.  It will be a 5/10km spin out towards Monasterevin. Jane or Murt will have details at PLC tonight.
Wed Swim:  7.00pm Boathouse, Athy.  At the moment the flow is high and strong in the Barrow.  The river swim will be assessed this evening or tomorrow and a text will be sent out if it is unsafe to swim tomorrow night.  Please note the weaker/less confident swimmers should only swim as far as the first slipway just passed the grotto and turn and swim back to the boathouse.  This is for YOUR safety. It is easier to exit the river at this point to walk back to start point and/or the challenge is approx 350m against the flow to slipway. This can be repeated 2 or 3 times in a session. You can still get your distance.  The flow under the bridge requires considerable strength and experience at times depending on the flow.  BE SENSIBLE.
Thurs Brick: 7.00pm Heath.  We will be changing the location of the brick in a few weeks for an added challenge and a change of scene.  I will keep you posted on this.
Fri:  Rest Day
Sat Cycle:  NO CYCLE THIS SATURDAY due to the huge amount of Trilogy members racing in Dunmore East.  Hopefully the weather will be nice.  Its great to see so many members in one race.  I think there are approximately 30 members entered.  Come on Trilogy!!
Sun Cycle: 9.00 am PLC. 77km flat. PLC Portlaoise, Monasterevin, Athy, Stradbally and back to PLC.

The Tuesday cycles have had a rolling leader system in place for the past few weeks and it seems to be working extremely well.  We hope to extend this to all other sessions in the coming weeks.

Happy Training! Denise

WHOLESOME FLAX/OATMEAL ‘PANCAKES’

WHOLESOME FLAX/OATMEAL ‘PANCAKES’

These pancakes are really nutritious and low in calories. (Roughly 100/120 calories each)

They keep well in the fridge for a few days and can be toasted to reheat.

They also freeze well.

Best of all they are really fast for a snack on the go and make a handy bread/toast substitute.

INGREDIENTS:

2/3 cup of rolled oats

2/3 cup of milled flaxseed (can be bought in Aldi) or whole wheat flour

1 cup of Milk

2 tbls of brown sugar (leave out if you like if you’re going to top with syrup etc when cooked)

1 ½ tsp of Baking Powder

¼ tsp Salt

¼ tsp Ground Cinnamon

2 eggs

2 tsp of Olive Oil

¼ tsp Vanilla Extract (optional)

(My cup is a regular coffee mug)

Play around with the ingredients to include fruit & seeds etc.

DIRECTIONS:

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. It should be a thick consistency.

Spoon the mix onto a lightly oiled hot frying pan. My square pan makes 4 just nicely. I imagine a regular sized round pan would take three. Spread them a little bit with the back of the spoon, but they will find their own level. Turn down the heat to mid way and cook until you see a few bubbles appear then turn. Give another few minutes on the other side. Job done. Makes 11/12.

Training for this Week

Hi Folks,

Well done to everyone involved in Tri Athy over the weekend.  Great to see such a turnout from Trilogy both marshalling, racing and supporting.
Tues Cycle: PLC 7.00pm.  Both groups starting together.  Cycle the Portlaoise Triathlon Route in reverse.  All groups should meet at the bottom of Coolbanagher Hill.  Aiming to do hill repeats here and then cycle through Emo village back in the old Dublin Road to PLC.  Group one - should aim to do 5 reps on Coolbanagher hill. Group 2 should be there a few minutes before Group 1 and aim to do 8 reps.  Try to focus on gears when going up the hill.  Stay in the saddle, with only the legs pushing (no shoulder movement - use the gears) until you get to the second rumble strips, then up out of the saddle and push all the way to the top of the hill, turn around and recover going down.  All cycle back together.  Approx 30 - 35km.
Wed Swim: 7.00pm Barrow, Athy, Boathouse.
Thurs Brick: 7.00pm, Heath.
Fri: Rest
Sat Cycle: 9.00am PLC:  Abbeyleix, Ballyroan, Stradbally, Vicarstown, Emo, Portlaoise. 62km. Flat some hills.
Sun: 9.00am PLC. Mountmellick, Rosenallis, Clonaslee, Mountrath via The Cut, Abbeyleix, Ballyroan, PLC.

Sunday 3 June 2012

Had a great race in Athy today & thanks to all for your support out on the course. It really helped.
& of course thanks to Jono for pushing me all the way.

New Tri Suits

HI All, I have to say a number of things in relation to the new proposed tri suit for the club. I was one of the people that was on the original design of the the existing Tri suits back in 2009. I have posted the original colour scheme here and the test samples with the sponsors name etc. It also shows the Trilogy Crest that was agreed by the members of the day . All of this was voted on, and agreed by the club members. I have spoken to Sinead and she has done a terrific job in the sample she has come up with and she has done this at her own expense and time and has had to pay for this Tri Suit and she is happy to say that this is her personal Tri Suit. I am writing here to ask the committee to stop even collecting samples of this Tri-suit or any Tri Suit from Base to Race. They have put their Logo on our Tri Suits and why or for what reason and are they becoming a main sponsor?. They have changed the Trilogy Logo without the clubs permission and if the club is going to invest in new Tri suits then it should be done with consultation with all trilogy members. A Committee should be set up like the last time to go and look at suits, taking into consideration the quality, brand, costing, style and esp. peoples decency when they are racing in public that was a contentious issue in the last Suit. Tri Suits has come a long way in 4 years and if we are to wear these for the next 4 years then lets get it right. Yours in Sport Michael Farrell

Joey Hannon Race Report '12 UPDATED!!

Please click on link below to share Dave Murphy's experience at Joey Hannon 2012. It makes for a great read. Apologies to Dave for the delay in getting this online.

Susan Wall added a great report detailing the race from the sprinters perspective.

Never one to remain too quiet, I threw in my two cents worth too.

Training Update

Hi Folks,

With regard to the TUES CYCLE tomorrow night it should read a 10km TT.  Murt will lead the session tomorrow night.  As this is a Time Trial everyone should be recording their times.  Bring your own stop watch and Murt also hopes to time the event.  We will revisit the route in a few weeks and people can check their improvement.

SWIMMING Eimear Mathews has also given the club some pool sessions for members to work on themselves.  Here are two sessions:
Session 1
200m front crawl warm up, easy, stretch. 2 x 300m  20 sec rest between sets. 4 x 200m 20 secs rest, increase pace, 2 x 100m hard effort, 30 secs rest between sets. 200m cool down. Total 2000m.
Session 2.
400m warm up and stretch.  5 x 200, 10 sec rest between sets.  Alternate pull and swim for each 200m. 6 x 100m - 75m easy 25 hard. 10 sec rest between sets.  200m cool down.  Total 2200m.
To increase distance, increase the various sets.  Thanks Eimear.

Summer Training Kicks Off

Hi Folks,
Summer Training begins tomorrow 14th May.
Monday night run:  8.00pm VEC Track.
Tuesday cycle:        7.00pm PLC (Note new time)
Route:                     TT cycle. Warm up spin out to Rathleague to the start. Turn left at Munny Cross, direction is marked TT.  Its 5km to the finish line in Stradbally - road is also marked there. Turn around and 5km from Stradbally back to start 2 x 5km TT.  Distance 25-30km.  If two groups the option is to repeat the 2 x 5km TT twice and return to PLC then. LEADER: Needed.  Contact Murt for further details. 087 9682945.
Wednesday Swim:  7.00pm Boat house.  Eimear Mathews will be here tonight to coach open water swimming.  All new members and new to open water should attend. Get the fear factor for the season out of the way.
Thursday Brick:     7.00pm The Heath.  Due to safety concerns we need a person to stay with the equipment during the session.  If anyone can do this please let me know at 087 2036718. It doesn't have to be a member but maybe a members friend.
Friday:             REST DAY
Saturday:         Cycle: 9.00am. Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Durrow, Ballacolla, Boris-in-Ossory, Castletown, Mountrath, Portlaoise. Distance 76km.
Sunday:           Cycle: NO CLUB CYCLE.  Abbeyleix Charity Cycle on for those interested.

Thanks to those who took the time to fill out the survey.  A few things were highlighted and we are trying our best to accommodate everyone.  We have moved the Tuesday evening cycle to 7.00pm. We can't really go later for safety reasons.  For running we have Monday nights at the track until end of June, brick session and run off the bike after Saturday cycle.  The best open water swim option is the Barrow, I knows its a journey for some but its the only session away from Portlaoise.

Again we need leaders this week for cycles.  We also need help at the brick session on Thursday.  We have identified an alternative brick session which should improve safety and variety which we hope to introduce in the next few weeks.  I will keep you posted.  Also in the coming weeks we will need bank walkers on Wednesday night during the open water swim.  Maybe someone might have a friend that would be happy to walk the bank and hold keys etc.

I can be contacted at denise@trilogy.ie if anyone has any comments. Denise.

Sunday Cycle

What a fantastic cycle this morning. The route had been planed and displayed on the website so Team Leader Simon ensured we all got off on time. (ok, I was 2 minutes late but there was no hanging around once I got there). There was 8 of us in total today and Simon made sure we stayed altogether while at the same time incorporating a 'big push out' for those who wanted it going into Stradbally. (I think it was Stradbally). Anyway, I'd like to thank Denise for the route and Simon for his leadership and of course the gang at the cycle. May we have many more mornings like this one.

CLUB SURVEY FOR TRAINING

Hi folks,

The survey is now online and open for all club members.  Please take a few minutes to fill it out over the next few days.  The link is http://trilogy.ie/testsite/survey.  Many thanks.  Denise.

CYCLE PLANS MAY / JUNE

Hi Folks,

I'm on a roll today.  I have been working with Willie and Murt on putting a cycling route plan together.  We are trialing this for May and June.  We are starting with set routes at the weekend, covering distance, terrain and difficulty.  We will also be including Time Trial routes on Tuesday evenings and shorter routes of approx 20-40km routes depending on demand and numbers.

To start with this Sunday Simon Tsang is your leader.  Meet at the PLC at 9.30 am (please note this time will change on Summer Training plan to 9.00am).
The route for Sunday  6th May is:
Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Ballyroan, Stradbally, Vicarstown, Emo, Portlaoise.  Distance 62km.
This course is a mixture of Flat and Hills.  Suitable to all levels, Simon will organise groups on the day.  Remember to bring a drink, snack, phone and puncture repair kit.

I will be putting the weekend cycle routes and distances on the Calendar over the next few days.
We need leaders for all of our cycles. Let me know if you are available, denise@trilogy.ie.  Also any helpful comments or alternative routes are welcome.

SUMMER TRAINING

Hi folks,

Its that time of year, SUMMER TRAINING.  We are hoping to kick off the Summer Training schedule on 14th May.  We are finalising the details at the moment.  There will be a survey on the Website in the next few days, please take the time to fill it out.  We want your input to make sure we are giving you, our club members what they want.

The current DRAFT PLAN is Monday Run 8-9 VEC. Tues Cycle from PLC 6.30, two groups, same route, depending on numbers.  Wed 7-8 Open Water Swim, Barrow. Thurs Brick, from the Heath 7-8. Fri 7-8 Open Water Swim, Barrow. Sat Cycle 60km 9.00am PLC, same route, two groups, depending on numbers with possibly a 2+ km run off the bike. Sun Cycle 9.00am 70-80km, two groups, maybe a shorter route depending on numbers.

Please think about what you want from the Club Training and tell us. We will try our best to get a plan that suits all.

Finally if you would like to help out in anyway just let me know. Denise@trilogy.ie Denise.

Tuesday Nice 'n Easy Cycle 6.30 from Portlaoise Leisure Centre.

The turnout for the past number of weeks for our nice ‘n easy cycle has been really good, especially when you consider the weather that has been on offer lately. We've managed to dodge the showers even on evenings when black clouds lurked nearby.  It's great to see the new faces turning up for these cycles. (If the veteran club members aren't careful the beginners are in serious danger of showing you all up!!)

There have been some murmurings within the club about adding a “ladies only” race coming up later in the season in Dunmore East, to our race calendar.

This would be a fantastic race for

  • - wannabee female triathletes (most of us know someone who would like to give it a go)
  • - women in sport and
  • - experienced female members
to aim towards, especially now that Tri Laois has been and gone. We will learn more about this soon.

These easy Tuesday evening cycles are perfect to get you started, keep you going OR to get back in the saddle for those of you who haven't been out a lot lately (both male and female).

I’m looking forward to seeing you as we meet with the faster group at PLC at 6.30pm Tuesday. If anyone has been putting off joining us because you are unsure of what’s involved, please feel free to email me Helena@trilogy.ie for more information.

Girl's Night Out!! Friday 18th May at 8pm

Yes ladies.... You heard right.

'Girl's Night Out' will take the form of dinner in "The Taste of Italy" in Portlaoise, to include Starter, Main Course, Tea/Coffee & perhaps even a little teeney weeney bit of wine.... (Shhhsh...)
Long suffering wives, girlfriends and partners of club members are also invited to join us. In fact, we would love you to join us!! This might be a great opportunity to get to know everyone. Better still... it might even be an excellent opportunity to get some payback by getting 'him' to babysit for a Triathlon event for a change while you get to enjoy it!! Payments of €20.00 each can be made via the website here. (log in using the link to the right) Friends are welcome also. Looking forward to seeing you there.

On another note, don't forget to check out the competition below to be in with a chance to win a race place in Brian Boru complete with accommodation. Click on the link to get a better look at the picture and get counting.  MY guess... 268.

Easy cycle again at 6.30

Killashee Triathlon

http://www.downsyndrome.ie/index.php/triathlons

Hi all. This triathlon held in a couple of weeks time is in a great cause. For those of you who are doing your first triathlon on Saturday in Tri Laois, this one will be similar in that it is also a pool swim & same distance. For those of you who aren't racing on Saturday it might make a good race to get the toes wet anyway. I will be driving up that day if anyone decides to enter and wants a lift.

Tuesday Handy Cycle

Hi guys, Our cycle is going out again this evening at 6.30 with the 'faster' crew from Portlaoise Leisure Centre. I'm looking forward to seeing you all there. Bring your runners and we'll do a short run afterwards. The time is drawing in fast now!!!

Please everyone refer down to Denise's post below looking for cycling helpers. I understand, as of yet no one has stepped forward to help out. Get emailing. Denise puts a lot of hard work into the training sessions behind the scenes, as well as the time and travelling she puts in when you actually get to see her at training sessions. All help is appreciated.

ALSO... with Tri Laois filling the thoughts and dreams of most of our lives these days, I thought I'd take this opportunity to remind everyone that Joey Hannon is the following weekend.

Ossory Cycling Club Tour

Susan Wall mentioned she is planning on doing this cycle. I believe Jane Keane might be joining her. If anyone is interested, it's a choice of 100 & 50k cycle via the Slieve Bloom on Sunday 22nd, kicking off from Rathdowney, at GAA Center at 10am. Fee 25 & 20e. That's as much as I know about it. Contact 087 6446792 as per their info. Might be a good way to blow off the cobwebs after Tri Laois & the few drinks....

Training

Hi Folks,

No one put their names forward for cycle leader for any of the dates I requested.  I know we are all busy but if everyone does a little it means no one has to do a lot!  Can I ask you to think again and   see if anyone is available for 6/5 or 13/5.  Denise@trilogy.ie will get me.  Looking to do 60 - 70 km.  All that is involved to be a leader is to show up on the day, make sure everyone can keep up to the distance and pace and have a safe cycle.  Our Club Superwoman Trish has kindly offered to take tomorrows cycle.  Meet at PLC at 9.30 am.

We have decided that next Sunday 22/4/12 will be a recovery day - No Club Cycle.  Recovery from Tri Laois and all its late night celebrations.

Finally the tests we did earlier in the year, I have to apologise its taken so long but here's the link to check out your times www.trilogy.ie/fitnesstests/

Friday 13 April 2012

Great cycle last night.

Well done to those who joined us yesterday evening for our one off prep cycle, this time in aid of Tri Laois. Job well done. Some went on to swim with Eimear and Mark also to finish their day off in style. I'll bet they slept well last night. Thanks to Trish who helped out also with her expertise and encouragement. Great cycle had by all. Not sure what was going on in the car park after with certain members falling around the place..... The term 'Just Deserts' popped up at one point... But you can't help wondering what some people are putting in their drink bottles!
Please, please, please check out  http://www.trilaois.ie/node/42  for some better sports nutrition drinks by Isostar (no alcohol - sorry).

Roll on Test Tri 1 in the morning!!!!! See you there.

Tuesday 3 April 2012

Calendar / Sunday Cycle Leaders

Hi folks,  I am trying to keep the calendar up to date so it will be easy for any member to check and see the training schedule for the coming weeks.  Please bear with me, I'm on a learning curve, and am trying my best.  To check the calendar just hold your cursor over any training session and the relevant details as to meeting place, time etc should appear.  You can contact me on denise@trilogy.ie if you have any comments or queries.  Thanks.

Also regarding Sunday cycles.  We currently have a 9.30 cycle from PLC which covers a distance of between 60 and 80 km.  We need people to put their names forward as leaders for these sessions.  The dates we need leaders are 15/4, 22/4, 6/5, and 13/5.  You can contact me on 087 2036718 or the email above if you are available to be a leader for any of these dates.

Also there is another cycle group that are covering a fast paced 100km + / - on a Sunday morning.  If you are interested please contact Willie on 087 6565424 for the details.

Hope everyones training is going well as we get closer to the race season.  Denise.
