Lost cycling jersey

Hi guys, it's that time of the season again when I have to start digging out all my training gear. This morning, however, no matter how deep I dug, my jersey was no where to be found. Then I remembered the last place I had it was in Groomsport so I'm calling out to everyone who was there in September to check and see if they have an extra cycling jersey. As we were all in transition together, it could have very easily been picked up by someone in the club by accident. I promise not to hold it against you. So could everyone just double check on their gear please. It would be very much appreciated.

Desperately Seeking Small Mountain Bike...

Lough Key Tri

Guys,

The Lough Key Sprint Tri in Lough Key forest park is now open. It is set in the park near Boyle in Roscommon, with a lake swim, a 23K cycle around the lake, and a run through the forest.
A very nice tri, and the park has a campsite for those of you who might want to take the family with you.
I did this last year and we all had a ball. It is on the 7th September this year.

Adventure Racing Update

I have been keeping a close eye on the Turas and am glad to say that Midland AR are all in good spirits and enjoying themselves despite the awful weather and high seas. This is day three of the event and they will be spending the day trekking around the Beara peninsula with visibility expected to be quite poor so let’s hope their navigator is in top form.  Looking forward to a good report from Patrick when it is all over.

Trilogy's future is bright

Hi Karl,
Ross Byrne (15 yrs old) completed his first Aquathon, first open water swim of 750m followed up by a 4km run in an excellent time of 36mins 30secs, placing him 41st in a field of 80 veteran triathletes. Ross, who had never worn a wetsuit before will only improve on this, as he committed the crime we all commit on our first (for others 10) open water swim. He followed some one else whose orienteering in the water wasn't the best. Congrats Ross. You'll be able to knock a few more minutes off next Wednesday when we sort out your transition!
And not to be out shone, Laura Ridgeway (16 yrs old) also made an amazing debut into the world of multisport. In a time of 37mins 15secs, Laura was placed 44th in this field. Laura has never swam in open water before so she also had the restriction of the 'wetsuit' to adjust to. She did extremely well. Unfortunately Laura will not be able to take part for the next 2 races as she will be on holidays but be warned fellow Trilogy members. The dedication that these athletes are showing will have us all on edge when they start competing in our Test Tri Series! Watch this space.

Hi everyone, I'm putting a call out to those of you who may be able to lend a hand for 2 - 3 hours on 14th June. Trilogy will be holding the childrens duathlon and junior aquathon on this day in Port Laoise Leisure Centre. We only have the pool and field booked for 1 hour from 10:00 - 11:00. TriAthy - A hugh Success

Hi guys, I just want to say how much I enjoyed competing in the 'Come on Sinead', I mean TriAthy triathlon. Thanks to everyone for cheering me on and sorry if I had no energy to acknowledge you all when I was taking park. You all helped me achieve a new Olympic distance PB. There is a HUGH amount of work that goes into organising a triathlon of this size and everyone in Trilogy can give themselves a pat on the back for the outstanding part they played. Next year I'll be the one cheering ye on. Now, I've to go back to work and take another few tablets for my hangover. It is, after all, the morning after THE NIGHT BEFORE.

Unfortunate News for Noble

Hi guys, just thought I'd let you know the disappointing news about Gavin Noble's attempt for the Olympics. He had his last race on Sunday. He needed to gain 199 points minimum. It was always going to be a tough task as the winner is awarded 250 points. While Gavin did very well in the race (placed 19th), it was not enough to secure his place in the Olympics. For those of us who watched him race in the Europeans, he did us proud. Good luck for the future Gavin and congratulations for getting as far as you did from the crew in Trilogy. See you in TryAthy.

From Lisbon to the barrow

Hi fellow open water swimmers,myself and some hearty souls decided to swim the barrow on Wednesday evening just to see what the lie of the land was before we bring the club over and to my surprise I kid you not the water was Luke warm honestly...Lisbon was colder last Sunday so I can assure every one coming over next wed night that you need not worry about the cold...Bring on the good times...

Lisbon - Gavins & Emmas Reports

What a great weekend? Anyone from Trilogy in Lisbon will tell anyone who wasn't there just that - probably a hundred time.

We had a round up of personal highlights today on our way home and for many, watching the elite race was a biggie. Both Gavin and Emma, contenders for Beijing at the start of the race, battled hard against lost water bottles and mishaps on the course.

It looks like Gavin did well to beat of the competition he knew about, but then didn't factor in a rising star who might now take his place to Beijing. See Gavins Blog here.

Emma Davis's take on the race is also available - see here. She was dogged by bad luck with her bike, but at the end of the race appears to be a little more comforatble than Gavin for Beijing.

PS there is a great race report about the Age-Group race and Team Trilogy to come from Trish, and a small mountain of photos from everyone to be published. Make sure you keep one eye on this site over the next few days for more.

Our Info Night

Hi Roy,
It’s a night that we open our doors to the outside world and invite people to come along and see what happens at a triathlon. Last one we held in the Heritage hotel last May. We all have people that ask us what’s it all about? So this is the night that it will all be explained. Those Pesky Winter Stains

One of our members has a problem. Wet weather and road dirt has left unwashable stains on his beautiful Trilogy cycling jacket, and having washed at 30 degrees (recommended temperature), 40 degrees (risking it?) and even 50 degrees (you mad yoke) they will not budge.

Any old wives tips that might help?

Hi Sinead,

I have done this in the past. I have a DVD recorder, and I can give you a loan of it, (dont use it much now with the invention of Sky +).

Let me know if you need me to help and I will gladly come to your assistance.

Idea for getting races off Sky+?

If you got your hands on a DVD recorder, you should be able to connect the SCART that goes into your TV into the DVD recorder. You should then be able to play the races on Sky+, recording on DVD recorder.

The Glass Slipper.

Eight o'clock struck and I was lost in transition. I picked up a shoe. It had the same lock lace as mine. I stood dazed, losing focus. Then it happened, a sharp lash of the Bracken tongue, "That's mine" it lashed. I dropped the shoe. Maeve scampered under her bike to retrieve. I turned saw my shoes, put them on and legged it up the road. I got another tongue lashing as she passed me several hundred yards up the road. Then it was Trish's turn. As she passed me shortly after, she pointedly reminded me in short sharp stabs not to park my bike in her spot. (I found out later that she had to scarper under my bike to retrieve her shoes).
These are the delights that I, a mere mortal of the duathlon type had to endure, as I so ably and single handedly hindered others, in the hope that I might still beat them in that second run of the so recent duathlon.
LADIES, I humbly apologise for my indiscretions and hope that you both can forgive me and let me beat you next time.

Right, that said, does anyone else have any race faux pas, they want to get of their chest?

Sky + Box

Hi guys,
I have recorded a Channel 4 Triathlon Series "Build up to Hawaii" on SKY +. There are 4 episodes including Ironman Uk 2007. Are there any computer/tv wizards out there who know how to burn this on to a dvd so I can share it out with the club?

Nice day for the sneaky training

Today the sun was shining and many of Trilogy's members wanted to take full advantage of it. Now, I'm not one for naming names BUT Eugene Dowdall was spotted running along the Curragh plains at lunch time. Mark O' Sullivan wanted to avoid any one catching him out in the fresh air by opting for the treadmill in the gym, again at lunch time. As the sun was still shining brightly after 17:30hrs, Emer Mathews took to her bike. I didn't find Trish the fish. She is getting better at hiding and as for you Mick Farrell, you failed dismally in your mission.

Hi Kevin, don't worry about some one showing you how to use your new tool kit. I think we forgot to mention at the AGM that Taco is Trilogy's designated Mechanic. Congratulations Taco on your new role!
As for the secret training sisters - keep up the good work. You might like to get a few tips on where to train from Trish the fish. Herself and Alison think they have found a new secret route in Kilkenny. Again I shake my head. Will ye never learn? I find out everything. (followed by an evil laugh).

sneaky training

Noel Territ spotted out the Dublin road tonight at 6 45 pm.Nothing new in that I suppose...I suspect their is alot of sneaky training going on up around the curragh and the streets of Dublin with Mr McCann and Mrs wearen..not much been said about that I notice...Mick Farrell spends that much time lifting sneaky weights he will soon turn into a DUMBBELL [Too late I hear you scream] You see besides Mr Territt the other  three are the real sneaky trainers,they manage to hide it so well and then they try to back each other up and play all innocent....just see how long it takes before they attack me..prob have a sneaky meet first to decide what to post....Ps keep up the good work Roy...Mick as  for Trish think she is in the Wicklow mountain doing the sneaky thing....Wont mention Pawel and his sneaky training just yet.... chat soon and look foward to the reply people....

Roy, everyone knows that Sinead is the sneaky training police for Trilogy. She was obviously out on 'Sneaky Training Patrol' in Monasterevan when you saw her.

It was great to see team Marshall out in numbers (again) for the test tri on Saturday. I'm after reading Bobby Behan's blogg and he thinks that you are a member of Midlands Triathlon Club. Say its not true Patrick!!!

A great start!

I would also like to add my thanks to those who helped make Saturday a great start to the year, and a great start to my tri career. It was a high enjoyable, and sore morning, and I am looking forward to many more, and I must admit, it is making think of how I can shave time off mine already.

Sorry you must have missed the race briefing yesterday it was a “training session” . Now why would I want to catch you I always give you a 20 minute head start to give you a chance.

I just want to say a big thank you to everyone involved on sat morning but especially to all the marshals and time keepers. It was great to be able to sit down today and look over the split times and try and work out where I can shave off a second or two for the next day out. I think there may be a few more people attending Willie’s transition training sessions. Look out Willie - I think that’s Karl just behind you.

'DO' and 'THOUGH'

Mick,
thank you so much for your concern, but I have to point out that it is unwarranted. Even THOUGH I changed my training wheels to my racing wheels for, that is right - a race, most people in the club are aware that these are NOT new wheels. I actually bought them when I bought my bike (it is lovely, isn't it?) AND it was not their first outing either. They graced the roads around the Heath in our last Duathlon of 2007.
However Mick 'DO' keep trying to catch me. I always enjoy a challenge!!!

Sneaky New Equipment


I can just barely stand sneaky training and all that it brings. What I cant stand is people getting new equipment and telling no one. Turning up on the day and trying to hide it. Now not one said best of luck to poor Sinead. She came along yesterday with brand new wheels and brand new tyres and not one of ye said best of luck. Ye were all too involved with your own race and your own times so I think this week we should all say best of luck on her new tyres and wheels. (Even do you weren’t even told about them)

Hi Maeve, I think that Look pedals and cleats are the best ones for you...They start at around 35 € for pedals up to 200 € or so...Make sure you get cycling shoes and not mountain bike shoes...they will have only one strap across them m/bike shoes mostely have three ok..This is for when you are taking your feet out 200 meters from the dismount line..Catch my drift...PS Cycle superstore have a good selection...

Trilogy Soundtrack?

The Triathlete

Not for the faint of heart, not for the weekend warrior type, and not for the arm chair athlete. The triathletes are a special breed of athlete.
No mountainous muscles or intimidating features, the triathlete stores their true power deep within. To look for evidence of such power, one only needs to look deep into the eyes of these warriors of the elements just before and after the beginning of competition.
Then, nothing else matters. They have no past, there is no future and life means nothing except the distance that needs to be travelled.
All that is regarded as living is suddenly redefined into a simplified existence within each arm stroke, each breath of air, and each step. But even then the true triathlete, regardless of their level finds the euphoria of the Triathlon not only by its finish, but from the Zen like state that comes, that gives them the superhuman ability to break any and all limitations - that keep men
simply men and women simply women. They are super athletes proving their worth only to themselves for the satisfaction to have said
“I did it”…….again…

Trish,
do you seriously think for one second that I will let you know when I'm going to Chad? Why would I take away the "Is Sinead going to catch me sneaky training?" element? Just remember people, whether you are lacing your runners, fastening your helmet strap or packing your goggles, the minute you step out your door to start on your sneaky training session, there is a GREAT possiblity that YOU WILL be caught. Admit it. You're training preparation wouldn't be complete without this thought. Trilogy wouldn't be the same if there was no name and shame for those of you who sneaky train campaign.

240 mile cycle

A friend of mine asked me to pass this on to you all….

There's a charity cycle coming up on the 4th to 6th April. The idea is to cycle 240 miles from Maynooth to Galway. It has been running a few years now and seems to be very well organised. Group cycle with food stops and support provided along the way.

Bobby Behan Training Weekend

Finally my Christmas present weekend had arrived, a training weekend with Bobby Behan.(Thanks to my Catriona for the present) On the run up to the weekend I got a few phone calls from Bobby just making sure that I was ready and looking forward to the weekend. He sounded equally, if not more, keen about the weekend than I. Little did I realise that this was a snapshot of the enthusiasm that this man has and brings to the sport.

The weekend started nice and early with a 6.15 meet and greet at Portarlington pool foyer. After some stretching and group introductions we were in the pool. Warm ups and drills ensued. Each participant was taken out during the drill sessions and videoed, to analysis their technique later on that day. The session lasted an hour and half,at this stage we were wide eyed and awake. Those of group that were staying with Bobby headed back to he's house for breakfast. But off we went,Kevin and myself to Johnny B's for some carbo-loading, i.e a full Irish breakfast.Little did we know that we would be caught with our mouths wide open tucking into a tasty sausage as Bobby arrived into Johnny B's to pick up some milk!

Video analysis was next on the agenda, which proved to be very informative and shocking. This was the first time I had seen myself swim and former thoughts of olympic swimmer where vanquished from my mind. Short stroke, narrow entry, wrong body alignment where all on display. However I have now been pointed in the right direction by Bobby. Following our two hour session of video analysis is was time for lunch.

Following lunch, we headed out on the bikes and hooked up with Joe who had been on the bike for some three-four hours at this stage. A little over an hour into the cycle my cassette went on the bike and I could go no where.The group continued on and Bobby offered me a push home. Some slow pushing!!! Some small hills and an hour and half later we where back. Thanks Bobby!

More food, shower and rest, recovered me from my long bicycle ride and got me in the mood for a run. The sign said on the entrance to the track, track flooded but this didn't dissuade any of us fearless triathletes. What a great way to end the day, with a floodlight run.

The second day eclipsed the first day which I didn't imagine possible. More focused drills for each individual to improve specific bad habits, finished the bike ride, personal bike washing service, running with former olympic athletes. More food in Johnny B's, meeting the entire Behan clan around Killenard. Great fun and craic.

All in all it was great. I came away feeling I had achieved alot. Specific drills to improve my swimming technique or just get a technique! Correct sizing for my bike, proper planning for the year ahead and most of all a sense of enjoyment and experience that I thought could only be achieved further afield.

Is there anyone interested in going mountain biking in Ballinastoe Co Wicklow on Sat morning? The circuit is 15km with a lot of single track which is quite technical but great fun. SNEAKY TRAINING

Well guys I am delighted to be able to tell you that sneaky training has been brought to new and exciting heights by myself and Patrick. Thanks to our loving partners who sent us to Bobby Behan’s training camp for the weekend. Over the course of the weekend we got individual coaching on all aspects of our swim, cycle and run from a man whose knowledge of, love for, and dedication to the sport has to be experienced. Patrick is going to write up a more detailed report so watch this space.

it is only sneaky training if you get caught. NO ONE caught us. We actually volunteered all relevant information so nice try. The next time you are in the gym doing your own sneaky training, you might catch some one then.

While Noel Territt may have started the trend of 'Training on the sly', I don't think that even he could have imagined how much this would grow. Spotted this morning (Sunday 13th) at 12:27, Steven O'Toole and Trish Nicolls on their bikes cruising up the hill in Emo. I just love the way that our new club cycling jackets make the sneaky trainers stick out from the crowd!!!

I Applaud you Maeve - well done

I just want to send the BEST wishes to Maeve Bracken on boldly taking the decision become a FULL time triathlete. I admire you Maeve. Most people just talk about it but you have put your money where your mouth is.
If you want to take a break from your training schedule, say for 2 or 3 hours a week, give me a shout. I know some one who wants a position filled in Triathlon Ireland for this time frame!!! :-)

Hi people just a word to welcome our newest member to Trilogy..Niall Collins from Portlaoise is the latest proud owner of our new gear,Niall lives in London and will be wearing our gear on the English circut this year..well done Niall...He will be entering some of our club appointed races with us this season and Niall has also entered the London Triathlon which he said might be one for the club to think about..so people food for thought eh,swim in the Royal Docks flat bike down by the Thames to Westminster and a flat 9.6k run...With Karl's cheap flights and Mick Farrell knowledge of London it could be a great 9th and 10th of August.....The closing date for entries is 31st Jan..Get back to me if interested ok..See http://www.thelondontriathlon.com/...
