Halloween Party @ Port Laoise Rugby Club
Hi everyone, just a quick reminder that the party for Laois Offaly Families for Autism is kicking off tonight @ 8 O'Clock at the rugby club in Port Loaise. The cost is €15 and you can pay at the door. There is a band and a dj and as far as I know some finger food. Costume is optional but we'd love to see some of you kitted out. Remember, there is no point going as a duathlete as people outside of our fitness/social circle might not get the joke. See you there.

Thank You!!
I really can't sing enough praises for this club we have. After nine months of prep, seeking advice from fellow club mates, the birthing process has been amazing.
It all started way back at Christmas 2010.. seems along time ago now when it all happened, it was all over in a second, the exchange of Christmas gifts and the damage was done. Needless to say the first three months were not too difficult, no aches or pains no morning sickness but the reality hadn't dawned on us yet. We were blissfully unaware what lay ahead, ignorance is a great gift. We started reading books to prepare for what lay ahead. Everything kept resorting back to nutrition so needless to say I gained a few extra pounds in the search for the perfect building blocks. After a further three months we had come to terms with the impending reality. Plans were put in place, the kids were all on board and Catriona was really excited about managing the whole affair. Fortunately there was no worries about it arriving early.
So on the 11th of September I stood neoprene clad and shouted at the top of voice my Christmas surprise had arrived. It was the first time the IRONMAN crew thought they may have needed the assistance of a medical psychiatrist. The rest is history now.
Thank you for sharing this journey with Cornelius and myself and most importantly for containing Catriona's anxieties when Cornelius's premature race lead looked to have threatened my return home. The deal being struck, if I failed to beat my brother, I could look for residency in Wales.

Well done Patrick & Cornelius
Wow - what a great time ye had, really impressed! Congrats to you both, put the bike up now for the winter, you've plenty of laurels to rest on!
I just thought I would re-visit the post that Patrick put up when he first announced his intention to race ...
Best Christmas present or not. I'll let you decide.
Hi,
Just want to get some advice on this, best present or not. Catriona has gone and entered me for Ironman Wales. What does this mean? Any help in this area would be much appreciated. Roll on 2011. Will need plenty of advice from our Iron men and ladies.

old mobile phones
Hi everyone, Irish Action Autism are giving iPads which also have the 'Grace' app installed on them to children on the autistic spectrum. They come at a price of 200 mobile phones so I'm asking if anyone of you have old mobiles lying around at home or if you know some one who does, can you please donate it to me? I'd really appreciate this as it would greatly help Tiernan's education. Thanks in advance.

They finished together.
A huge huge huge congratulations to Patrick and Cornelius Marshall who finished their first Ironman race in a time of 11hrs 42 mins and 43 seconds. We are all in awe of you. Well done
Its started and its close
With the first half of the swim done Patrick has a lead of 10 seconds on Cornelius. More importantly, their first split (36 mins) puts them in line for a sub 1:20 swim - superb pace, equivalent to a sub 27/28 min Olympic Swim. See the post below for links to Patrick / Cornelius tracking.

Offical Results
Hi everyone. A correction on my previous report. I finished 41st out of 47. My times are as follows: Swim - 36:09, T1 - 18 seconds, Cycle - 1:09:35, T2 - 29 seconds, Run - 50:39. Overall time = 2:37:12.
The Answer - Non Wetsuit
Hey everyone, my elite race experience is over and I can safely say that I won't be applying for a professional license any time soon. The sea was rough but not cold and I was delighted to experiece being introduced and taking my stand on the allocated mat. Take your marks and then the cannon blast. Most of you know that I've been working extra hard on my swim this year and the benefits have shown in previous races. Today however, this was not to be. I don't have my offical times yet but I exited the water in 35minutes. The good news is though, I wasn't last.
Onto the bike, my strong discipline. The plan was to chase down a pack and draft. The plan didn't work. I hadn't packed my cycling legs and when I did manage to hook onto a group for 1 lap, it wash disheartening to say the least that they started to unclip their shoes and I still had another 2 laps to go.
I still had the run to do and I was hoping for a good one. After all, at this stage I'd nothing to lose. I did know that I wasn't last as I had managed to lap twice a couple of girls from the Republic of South Africa. On so, it was onto my 10km run. What the hell is happening to me. My back, hips and knees all had pains going through them which I've never experienced before. When I mentally gave out to myself for focusing on this, my calf muscles started crying out for attention.
At the turn around at each lap, I could see my time and I knew that it wasn't a good time for me. I think that I ended up being 2hrs 40mins and NOT last. (44th out of 47). When I compare this to Hell of the West which is longer and not a flat course like today's, I was only 4 minutes slower in Hell of the West.
I'm still going through the post race anlysis and trying to find out what exactly went wrong but today, I just cannot pin point it.
That is the negative stuff out of the way. The fact is, I enjoyed it and soaked up the atmosphere. When I knew my race wasn't in me, I started to take stock of all around me. I cannot tell you the amount of people who were cheering us all on and from all the athletes that we have met over the past 2 weeks. CISM represents 'Friendship through sport' and this was evident from all the girls in the race today. I will never get the chance to race elite again and in such a location.
The closing ceremony happened this evening and it was a great atmosphere. We start our journey home tomorrow and although I'm looking foward to getting home, I'll certainly carry the many brilliant memories and experieces with me from Rio for the rest of my life. See you all next week. I'm looking forward to the race report from The Beast.

We start our journey home tomorrow and although I'm looking foward to getting home, I'll certainly carry the many brilliant memories and experieces with me from Rio for the rest of my life. See you all next week. I'm looking forward to the race report from The Beast.

Wetsuit or non wetsuit. That is the question.
Hello again everyone. I'd a lovely report typed up yesterday and just as I clicked on 'Pulish Post', the connectivity went! Another typical day in the Blue village so this evening I'm in the Green village where comms are far less of an issue. Yesterday we had our race brief which was very professional. In lieu of a cycle in the moonlight, 4 buses departed from our athlete village to travel the 1hr 40min to our race venue at 06:00hrs. Our body clocks have adapted well so this was no hardship for anyone. The fact that our location was Copacabana beach may also have had something to do with the lack of grumbling triathletes. While we waited for everyone to take their seats, ITU replays of races were shown on a large screen. It was an interestlingly noisey brief with over 50 countries being represented in this race, transalations for many languages were constant. While this race is an ITU event, no one will be taken off the course if they are lapped on the bike. Yay, thankfully this is one less worry for me. There was some raised concerns from triathletes about providing there military ID. (Obviously, these were the concerns of the Professional triathletes - a category which Team Ireland does not fall into.) It is to be a beach start for a 2 lap swim, followed by an 8 lap bike course followed by a 4 lap run. The bike falls short of 40km and comes in at 38.4km. The other intersting thing about this race is the penalties. Each team is allocated a boxed position to start on, on the beach. If any member of the team goes before the cannon blast or after the cannon blast a 15 second penalty is awarded to each member of the team. This will not affect me as I am the only female triathlete on team Ireland but there are 3 male members so it will have more bearing on their race. Believe it or not, the weather is taking a turn for the worst, so 1 hour before the race begins, they will find out if the water tempeture is below 22 degrees. If it is, it'll be a wetsuit swim. I was disappointed by this as I was looking foward to having a non wetsuit swim but this was just my naviety shinning through. We went onto the swim course then and I rapidly changed my mind.
The only way I can describe the conditions is a warmer Hell of the West swim. These waves where fairly big. I thought it was in my mind that I was feeling sea sick on the first lap but the second lap told me, it certainly wasn't in my mind, more likely my stomach. We practised running in and out then and I was really surprised at how tiring this is on the legs. Maybe if it is a wetsuit swim, it won't be as bad.
After this, it was time to soak up some welcome rays on the beach. All in all it was a very relaxing day. Today is a rest day so no early morning start although I was up and about at 06:30hrs. I made my way over to watch Terry's competition. He didn't do as well as he'd have liked but being a non shooter myself, I was very impressed.
As for the weather, it is a bit cold and even raining. Tomorrow is forecast the same and the wetsuit is looking very possible. Chat soon and enjoy The Beast. Take care and as I said to the kids on the phone, only 5 more sleeps until I'm home. :-)

Update from Rio - Eventually
Hi everyone and thank you all so much for your good luck text messages. Internet connectivity over here in the 'Blue Village' is up and down so at the moment I'm over in the 'Green Village' and for the first time since I've left I'm been plugged into the Internet. So far, everything is beyond my expectations of what the World Military Games would be like. The opening ceremony will probably stay with me for life and that was even before Pele lit the torch! The heat is certainly going to be a factor but as my race is on at 08:00hrs I'm hoping that I'll be perfectly aclimatised to deal with it by Sunday. Our training is going well with our taper period is starting from tomorrow. At the moment we are up and training on the bikes by 06:00hrs on a 2km airstrip in one of the many military bases. This is usually followed by some breakfast and a power nap before our next session which varies between a swim in an outdoor pool or a good track session. we found out during the week that it will be a non wetsuit swim. I was very apprehensive about this at first but once we got to Copacabana beach for a swim session, I am far more relaxed about it all. I then went for a 5km run along the sea front and more than once I've had to pinch myself to make sure it is all real. We have our race brief on Thursday and as far as I know, there are close to 50 in the women's race. A high percentage of these are professionals but hey, the race isn't over until it is over!!!! If I don't get any more posts up, I'll write a race report when I get home. Thanks again for all of your text messages and I'll see you all next week. Good luck to those who are taking on Beast of the East. Have a safe race.
Sinead.
PS: Terry entered me into Challenge Roth for next year. Any other takers?

Thanks to everyone for all their help on Tuesday and for all the 'Get Better' phone calls and text messages. I can safely say I'm well and truly on the mend. I'm back at work today. I won't be racing on Saturday but will be there to help out. I have a big race in 2 weeks that I am more than ready for. I've been informed today that I made the team for the World Military Championships. We are flying out on Tuesday :-)

Sinead On the Mend
Have been hearing about the bad accident at training on Tuesday. Sinead is a bit broken up but thankfully recovering, no doubt as speedily as she has been racing this year. Apparently, the helmet played its crucial role again, that golden club rule is so important!
As for the scum who picked up a bike while the ambulance picked up Sinead - I hear the gardai have caught up with you and recovered the bike - lets hope they get their day in court now!
Sinead - take it easy, but not too easy - lets see you back for a race in a few weeks time!

On the mend

Thanks for all your good wishes. It means a lot to me. Thankfully I did not break anything and my Trek Helmet (pictured below) did its job and the Man above looked after me. If I didn't have a helmet I shudder to think what would have happened. To those who are tempted to cycle without a helmet please do not. It is not worth the risk. Well done to Deirdre Walsh who completed the Wicklow 100 and to Willie Fitz, John Fox, Leo Timmons, Andrew and JJ who did the 200 in dreadful conditions and who managed to get my bike back. Over 9 hard hours in the saddle while I was tucked up in a warm bed. See you all soon.

TriAthy 2011
The start of the new season of triathlon is already here, and with it we are now gearing up for TriAthy. The 2011 event on 4/5 June incorporates 4 race distances - the traditional Olympic and Sprint events, the return of the Try-distance event from 2010, and a new long distance (Double Olympic Event).Join the Marshall List now
Trilogy Triathlon are providing all the marshals for the event, and so we are looking to our members to make the event a success again in 2011. With Saturday 4 June being the biggest day for racing, with two separate sessions, we will be looking for about 120 people to cover all points through the day. On Sunday, racing will finish earlier (around lunchtime), and we need about 80 to cover that day. There will also be other duties, such as set-up and registration on Friday 3 June, tidy-up after racing on Sunday and the SwimAthy event which happens the Sunday before race weekend. All members are expected to marshal the event, and we also ask that you bring along additional help. Each marshal supplied by the club brings additional money to the club, and this money is used entirely for member benefits - like subsidised training, coaching, discount club gear, free events like the Test Series, trips away, social activities, right down to the website and text service. Please Join the Marshall List now

Ballycotton
Hi everyone, I just thought I'd let you all know the reason Mr Marshall was not at the test Duathlon on Sunday was because he had other business to attend. Patrick set a new PB for the Ballycotton 10mile run in a disgustingly fast time of 58mins. Well done Patrick - you have finally tamed that particular beast.

Music for Tri Laois
Well there are about 60 days until the big event and for the 3rd year running i will be providing the music around the finish line.
With that in mind i am opening up requests to all of you who will be marshalling on the day. It will be all upbeat and high tempo music and in total there will be about 5 hrs of it so pop me an e mail with a song or two you'd like and i'll add it to the playlist. Fingers crossed hearing a song you requested will get you through the long day !
As i said all i ask is that its up tempo and after his selections for spinning i'd ask Willie to refrain from requests !
You can e mail to me at sales@apollodjs.ie

Sunday Cycles
Thanks for a great turn out this morning. Four of us made in over from Athy to meet with a group of Eight from Portlaoise. A wee bit cold to start but the roads were dry and sun came out. Even the big hill in Timahoe did not deter us. Some good training was had by all, so for those who did not partake there will be plenty more cycling on saturdays and sundays. Watch the website and the text service. Don't forget to renew your membership. See you on the road....

Book Review #3 - Hal Higdon's The Marathoners
This book was written in 1980, a time when long distance and recreational running was phenomonally big, comparable to the current interest in triathlon. While the book gives a quick history of marathon running before 1970, its focus is on the 1972-1980 period. During this time the marathon became a serious Olympic Sport, but more than that, it became an everyman event.
Higdon gives great details about the legends of the time, Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers. The beauty of this book is that the author places you the reader right into the race - you can literally feel your heart beat faster as the pace increases, you can almost hear the crowds, taste the tension and feel the pain as each major race is described.
The book also gives a great insight into the development of the Boston and New York marathons, plus ground-breaking events in the 1970s like the inclusion of women in the sport for the first time, and how the sport grew from events that attracted 200 nutcases in 1970 to thousands of ordinary people by 1980.
Note:I read this on my Kindle, so I don't have a paper version - yet. I am trying to locate one, and will offer it around when I get it.

Its for 180KM of great scenery & great fun on the day, their was over 6000 cyclist last year and all you have to do is get some sponsorship, when you register they will send you some cards and the rest is easy. Bargain Magazine Subscription
The normal price is €44.95 for subscription, or about €5.50 per issue in the shops. In my opinion, at least, I find it the best of the 4 tri magazines available - 220 Triathlon, Triathlete Europe, Triathlon Plus and Triathletes World (and I have subscribed to them all at various times).
To get the deal:
1. Go here
2. Change the country to 'Republic of Ireland' - this also changes the pricing to Euros
3. Use the promotional code 'ET122010' to take the €10.00 off.
I am not sure how long the code will work until.

No Pain, No gain!!
Judging by the grimace thats either one really bad groin strain or he mounted his bike a little too hard on the mount line. Nothing like some squashed goolies and 40 k still to go. You are the man, Roy! Now where is that damn ice machine?

Book Review No. 2 - 'Open'
Despite the many hurdles he faced, Agassi became no.1 in the world on three occassions, won every one of the 4 Tennis 'Grand Slams', and was the first player to have done this and win a Gold Medal at the Olympics.
The book is called 'Open' and it truly is - very personal, very open and written in a way that you won't be able to put down. You do not need to be a tennis fan or even know who Agassi is, the book is so well written that you will quickly want to know who he is and what the sport is all about.

Book Review - 'Born to Run'
Been meaning to post up some of the books I have been reading over Christmas (and the perfect weather we'vebeen having for reading).
There are 2 books that I think anyone might enjoy and the
first is 'Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen' by Christopher McDougall. About a native people in Mexico that run long distances over rough terrain at consistent pace and practically barefoot, it is also a great story of a legendary race, of some of the greats of Ultra-Running, of a mysterious eccentric.
Most of all, for me, it is an inspirational new way of thinking about running. I absolutely loved the book! Both Niall Kavanagh and Patrick Marshall recommended it to me, and I have since lent my copy to Sinead. If you'd like a read of it after Sinead, just let me know, I'll happily get it to you.
I will send a review of my second book in a couple of days ... anyone read anything interesting?

Triathletes are not normal!
Hi everyone, I just had to share this with you all. I was bringing Tiernan out today teaching him how to cycle his bike. Brónagh asked him the following: "Tiernan when you can cycle, are you going to become a triathlete like Mammy and me?"
Tiernan's reply was this: "I don't think so Brónagh. I just want to be a normal person."
What can I say?

What can I say?
She loves you
Hi Patrick, my interpretation of your Christmas present is this:
Catriona loves you and has picked something that she knows you are more than capable of doing but you won't get the finger out and do it yourself. You know what they say? Behind every good man, there is a woman......
